Instructions for Setting Up the CV Tool

This is the Controlled Vocabulary Creation and Maintenance Tool. Choose the Windows or Mac version of the application.

Before running the application, install a MySQL or Oracle database. For MySQL you need the root user and password. For Oracle you need a sysadmin account.

Unzip the file where you want it and on Windows click the .exe file and on the Mac run the application file.

You will get a message that you have no repositories defined. That's fine. Click OK.

Choose from the File Menu Create New DB, then choose for MySQL or Oracle.

MySQL will ask you to login in as root. Make sure the JDBC Connection URL points to the correct DB. It doesn't have to be on a local machine.

Login in as "root"

It will now ask to create an Admin account. Override or keep the existing username, cvadmin. Enter a password. OK.

It will now ask to create a read only account. Override or keep the existing username, cvread. Enter a password.

Enter a name for you database. This is the name used by MySQL.

Enter an ID for this database. This will be used in your configuration file.

The database is now created. Add a Thesaurus, i.e. a category. Add Terms to that category. Add more terms.

Configuring the AWB for your CV:

On Macs, right-click the application icon and choose 'Show package Contents.'

CD to the 'Working Directory'; cd to conf.

On Windows, cd to the conf directory.

All actions are the same for Windows and Macs for the remainder of activities.

Edit the cvconfig.xml file.

At the top of the file are several tags for categories. For each new category or thesaurus you have added with the CV tool you need to make a category entry in this xml file. Follow the pattern outlined. You need to know the id of the category or thesaurus. You can get this from the table in the database using mysqladmin to list the table's content.

Delete any categories that you no longer need.

Look for a tag under the repository tag, called Identifier. Replace the current id with the one you defined when you created the CV database.

The next tag is for the links to the db.

Change the jdbdUrl tag so that it points to your recently created database.

Change the username and password to the read only account you set up earlier.

Delete the termInclusionCondition tag and all it's enclosed content.

Change the languageCategoryThesaurusID to the id of a category that has languages in it that you will use with the drop down box for Transcriptions.

Enter a defaultLanguage, just ad the term name appears inthe CV.

Save the file, open AWB, you should now be connecting to  your new CV database.

Links for AWB

As promised here are some links for the Annotator’s workbench application.
The AWB itself: -- Windows version --
                        --     Mac version    --

Download and unzip where ever you want the AWB application. For Windows, I usually put a link to the awb.exe file on the desktop.
If you are interested in using the automatically created web site, here is the link to the zip file:
https://www.slashtmp.iu.edu/public/download.php?FILE=wgcowan/40514FbOy2R

Unzip and then you need to move your Annotator’s Workbench .awx file to the root directory and move any movies you need to the video directory.
See the readme file for more info on setting up the web pages.

Finally, here is a link to a draft of the Annotator’s Workbench User’s Guide.

For those interested in the Controlled Vocabulary tool contact me. I will help with setting up your CV for the AWB. It can get complicated.
